Busy week

It has been a busy week here in the USofA. We have a lot of work going
on at the moment, which is really good, but it does mean that there is
always a lot of stuff which needs to be done.

On Monday night we had our Tour de France for the Champagne valley,
which was fantastic. It was great to hear the history and stories of
the place. The bubbly was beautiful as well.

Tuesday night we went and saw Bill Clinton and had a fleeting meeting
with him outside. Lots of fun. His speech was good, and it was great
to see him in person. I was a bit disappointed at the level at which
he pitched his speech. I always find this with politicians, that they
aim their speeches at the lowest common denominator. I thought the
same thing about Julia Gillard when I heard her speak at the Sydney
Institute. It seems like they are permanently speaking in the tv ad
style. It is as though they are the Sydney Daily Telegraph of
speaking. Aiming at the general knowledge of a 12 year old. This might
sound really elitist, but the forums I saw the politicians speak in
were policy forums where I was expected to be intellectually and
politically challenged. Just didn't happen.

I guess I was thinking that there might have been some serious food
for thought or some big ideas.

However, the night itself was excellent. He is a tremendous orator and
delivered a very good speech. He did well in the Qand A session too.

Then it was off to Houston. I flew down in the afternoon, finished up
my work and went for a walk in the fading sun. Not too many people
walk in Houston. It is a very spread out city. There are tons of car
parking spaces right in the centre of the downtown area. Almost
everyone was driving around and most of the cars were pretty big!! It
was pretty hot and humid as well. houston is right down on he gulf of
Mexico. Even as the evening wore on it was very sweaty weather.

As I was walking along a pigeon flying overhead decided that I needed
extra decoration and delivered and aerial delight down my arm, leg and
shoes. A massive one as well! Rick thought he was startled at seeing a
pedestrian as he may not have seen one before.

Flying back last night and amazing thunderstorm hit houston airport.
Lighting was striking the ground on the tarmac. It was pretty amazing
to watch out the windows of the lounge. The airport was closed for 45
minutes. Nothing was moving. I had previously shifted my flight to the
early one rather than the late one (home at 11 rather than 1), but I
was obviously worried about the massive delays.

Well, almost every flight on the board was delayed except mine which
reported an on time departure. What had happened was that a lot of the
flights needed to divert to surrounding airports. Fortunately, my one
wasn't. I was home by 11:15 and very happy about it.

This weekend is going to be a quiet one I think. A bit of rest and relaxation.

That's all for now, in the elevator at work.
